Despite the fact that Zebras live in Africa, they are well-known worldwide. This is apparently due to their outlandish and easy to remember appearance. Zebras are an attractive sight at zoos. They adapt easily to zoo conditions and are often tamed. Zoo visitors are impressed by the strip pattern of the species and its interesting behavior.

Zebras - Behavior

The sight of two Zebras touching each other is very spectacular. Generally, physical contact is an integral part of the species' life. They can often be seen standing side by side with their heads on each other's croup. This habit is of practical importance for Zebras. When standing in such a position, Zebras keep away flies by waving tails near each other faces. Besides, this pose provides for a better view of the surroundings. In the case of danger, one of Zebras will surely see the predator.

Zebras - Feeding Habits

Wake periods and feeding behavior of Zebras in captivity can be easily understood if keeping in mind their habits in the wild. The species spends most of daytime feeding. The Zebra feeds mainly early or late at day. They are grazing animals. Therefore, grass is the main constituent of their diet.

In the middle of the day, when the heat is very often unbearable, Zebras sleep standing. At night, however, Zebras lie down. This is the time when there is the highest chance of predator attack. Therefore, Zebras have to be very careful when sleeping. As a rule, a Zebra will not go to sleep unless there is another awake Zebra by his side. The same with feeding. Only a few members of the group bend their heads to reach grass. Others have to watch out at this moment. Otherwise, Zebras will become an easy prey of predators.
