The adult animals live in groups consisting of a male and a few females, each group with a home range. The groups are made up of nonrelated adults since both sexes leave their natal area. The animals live 10-25 years in the wild; to 35 in captivity.

These are herd animals that are colored white and black stripes with white underbelly. As a matter of fact each individual stripe pattern is different and he skin is black, even under the white hair.
